Milton Abbas is a picturesque village in the heart of Dorset. It contains 36 almost identical thatched cottages, a church, a pub, The Hambro Arms and the Almshouses. They are believed to have been built between 1770-1780 to a design by Sir William Chambers, who with Capability Brown were responsible for planning the houses and the layout of the grounds around the Abbey. This was following Joseph Damer’s instructions, wanting the town of Middleton removed as he disliked it being so close to his house. Joseph Damer was to become Lord Milton, 1st Earl of Dorchester.
The village has a website with lots of information about the village, accounts from residents and information on upcoming events, including the biannual Street Fair which is very popular and next held on Saturday 27th July 2019. Please click here to be taken to the website.
